how are we doing as instructor and
learner?: assessment workshop
july 10-12, 2017
Buffalo thunder resort, santa fe, new mexico
Assessment and evaluation is a topic of interest and concern for our Native Language programs and teachers. Tracking progress of our language learners is important because it informs instructors and mentors whether the method and efforts are producing results. Using assessment tools for foreign or English language learning is useful to a certain point, but it does not fit the deeper goals of heritage language learning. We will ask key questions, explore what and why we want our language to be vibrant, and discover ways to measure tangible and intangible progress of language acquisition. We will discus how to implement culturally-relevant assessments in tandem with school standards. Click here for registration form. June 19, 2017 is the deadline to register.
ENGAGING OUR FAMILIES AND COMMUNITY
FOR OUR LANGUAGE LEARNERS workshop
july 31-AUGUST 2, 2017
MYSTIC LAKE HOTEL, PRIOR LAKE, Minnesota
It takes the Whole Community to nurture our heritage languages. Our children who are acquiring language in childcare, preschool and schools much have support and reinforcement in their homes and communities in order to become fluent. How do we connect "programs" with "people"? How do we motivate the Whole Community to be part of the language revitalization? This three-day workshop will showcase some successful models of family/community engagement, help participants develop strategic plans, explore public relations methods that work for your community, adult language learning opportunities, and other topics. The training will help tribal leaders, administrators, teachers, families, and youth to plan creatively outside the box and go beyond language in the realm of respecting / honoring / celebrating our Heritage language.
